Daughter’s haircut and flashes of the past - The Hair Story Network (2025)

• My husband Adi is a doctor and I am a business consultant we have been married for 18 years, we met in high school and now we have a 16 year old daughter Alyssa. She too has chosen to be a doctor like her dad and has to prepare for med school. My husband has become pretty strict with her for the same. He has taken her phone he doesn’t allow her to go out much keeps a track of her studies. I have taken up a new project at work and it keeps me occupied.
  Adi recently told me that he is concerned about Alyssa and how she is spending too much of her time on her hair. She has her hair till her waist it is thick, lustrous and beautiful.I make sure her hair is always well maintained,a few inches carefully trimmed to keep her hair healthy.

I told him that it is a teenage phase and that she will get over it Adi told me that he doesn’t want to take some actions and I was reminded of us back in the day as I realised what he was hinting at and told him that it wouldn’t be necessary. I had to work on Saturday too and had to fly out if town on Friday soo before leaving I told aly to focus on her studies and listen to her dad. She gave a nod and gave me hug as I left.

The Unwanted Reality

I came home on a Sunday morning tired from work and As I sat in the sofa I saw Adi’s face he was furious. I asked him what was wrong and he said that aly had been showering for an hour and he apparently wanted her to attempt a test today which was essential for her.

Aly stepped out of her room after a 15 more minutes and snapped at Alyssa. She told him that she had to wash her hair and it takes time, she told him that he never understands her. Adi just lost it, I calmed him down before he could speak anything and then he went to our room.

I entered the room to find him rummaging through his drawer, I knew what he was upto before I could even speak he looked me dead in the eye and said you know what’s next and don’t you dare interfere. If there’s one thing I am most scared of its my husband’s rage, I couldn’t even speak after he said that.
He then called Alyssa to the backyard and asked her to sit in the chair he had sit up in the middle of our backyard, She couldn’t comprehend but was afraid to further exacerbate her dad’s anger and quietly sat down in the chair. The look in Adi’s eyes was the same as it had been back then. Alyssa asked Adi why he had called her to which he replied Remember I told you to get into a med school you need to make sacrifices well it’s time.
She was confused and asked what do you want me to do Dad? And he said you just need to sit down and let me give you a short haircut it’s time. Her expressions quickly changed as misery,shock and despair took over.

The Moment of Massacare

She started crying and begging. She said please dad anything but not my hair, I will focus in my studies do everything you want please dad not my hair. She begged with her tear stricken face as her voice trembled hoping her dad would change her mind but it’s Adi he would never change his mind no matter what the repercussions.

He asked her to sit in the chair before it gets worse, she sat in the chair and said ‘’All salons are closed today I will go with mom tomorrow and get a haircut”. He slapped her and replied “Didn’t you hear me I will cut your hair” , I used to work at a barbershop part time and cut hair there to pay for med school. Ask your mom she has experienced this before he said as he fastened the cape around her neck with a grin on his face. Aly looked at me with tears in her eyes hoping I could help her but I was immersed in my head as the flashes of past played in front of eyes.
I snapped out of my thoughts as I saw Adi combing through Alyssa’s waist length hair, he then picked up his scissors alyssa asked him to not cut her hair as she sobbed he came in front of her and said “ You will get a haircut today,you’re not getting up from that chair without one and if you cry it will just get worse”. She then gave up and sat as tears flowed down her cheeks. Aadi combed a long strand of her hair and chopped it right at her neck as long hair hit the floor, he continued combing and cutting her hair, his scissors ate through her thick hair making the sound I hate the most,The pile of her hair at the ground increased. He finally combed our the last longer section of hair on her head on the right said and cut it as another tear flowed down her eye.
When he was done Alyssa’s hair that once flowed down her waist was just couple inches down her ears.

When we finally thought it was over. Adi again ran his merciless comb up her nape and his picked his scissors again Alyssa started crying and I couldn’t hold it in anymore and said “Adi I think its short enough now let her go she has learnt”. This infuriated him and said ‘did I not tell you to not interfere’ and then looked at Alyssa and said ‘and you not to cry and create a ruckus’.

He took a pause and asked Alyssa to get off the chair removing the cape.I sighed in relief but it was short lived as he approached me and grabbed me by my arm and sat me in the chair. It was too sudden for me to even resist what he was doing, I said “Aadi what are you doing” and he said grinning and gleaming “ I think its time for you to relive some moments and our daughter could see what she is going to get” The similarity between the two of you is uncanny. He said securing the cape on me and then he tied my hands to the chair.
